Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Understanding primary snoring vs. snoring secondary to sleep apnea

Snoring is caused by an airway that is partially obstructed during sleep. As air passes over the blocked area when the snorer breathes, vibrations occur that sound like that characteristic rattle. All of us snore at some time or other. But snoring can vary dramatically in its frequency and severity. Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by habitual or chronic snoring. Individuals with OSA may also snore particularly loudly, which can strain relationships and interfere with other household members getting the sleep they need to be well-rested, productive, and healthy.

VIA Health Group in Canton, Ohiois a craniofacial sleep medicine certified provider. Dr. Jeff Danner has considerable training and experience in accurately evaluating the true nature of a patient’s concerning symptoms. He can further rule out other causes of these symptoms and provide a diagnosis of sleep apnea that you can trust.

Primary snoring versus sleep apnea

Snoring that is not secondary to severe problems, such as obstructive sleep apnea, may be light or infrequent or occur more than two or three nights each week. Due to the frequency of primary snoring, it can be disruptive to relationships but is typically not a cause for alarm. If the snoring is both regular and accompanied by other worrying signs, OSA may be to blame. Snoring caused by OSA is also marked by:

  • Choking
  • Snorting
  • Gasping
  • Particularly loud, bothersome, and noisy snoring
  • Bruxism or chronic teeth grinding

Individuals with apnea have a total obstruction that stops their breathing. So, several potentially life-threatening complications can also arise due to the likes of irregularities in their blood oxygen levels. These complications are not limited to hypertension, obesity and metabolic syndrome, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, depression, and anxiety. Untreated OSA is furthermore associated with chronic fatigue, which puts you at increased risk of accidents on the road and on the job.
